Preparations...

Bonjour!
Recently I've been spending time on homework, projects and exams we had to do before break. This is ok though, because we will be away from the monastery for 20 days. In my free time I've been taking walks, bike rides, and enjoying the increasingly nice weather. This past Thursday it was in the 70's. I had a lot of anatomy studying to do but i decided to take a break after lunch for a bike ride. It was so refreshing, perfect weather. Whenever I got back from the bike ride, I spent the afternoon studying on a blanket in the sun. I was able to get a little sun while studying and it felt great. The next day was gorgeous too.
Yesterday I started packing because tomorrow, I LEAVE FOR AVIGNON AND THEN PARIS!!! We'll stay in Avignon a couple of days before heading up to Paris. We'll spend about 5 days exploring Paris. Our professor gave us our Itinerary....some of the things we get to see are:
*Eiffel Tower!!
*Musee d'Orsay
*Louvre!!
*Galerie Mona Lisa
*Arc de Triomphe
*We do a ceremony of putting a wreath  on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
*Visit assigned Museums
*International Mass Notre Dame de Paris
* The Quartier Latin
*Visit Marais, Place des Vosges, Musee du The (Tea)
*Versailles

We have multiple things for each day, I just chose some of the main ones to share. I can't wait....
Last night we watched the movie "Midnight in Paris." It was a great movie, I recommend that you watch it. It made me extremely excited for Paris, as if i wasn't already.
After Paris, on the 14th, Hannah, Allison, Megha, Kayla, and I will be flying to Ireland! We will be there for St. Patrick's Day and then leave for Rome on the 18th. In Rome we will meet up with some of the guys and stay there until we return to the monastery on the 24th. I'm a little nervous about all the traveling. I hope that all our flights and transportation works out. It's gonna be a crazy next couple of weeks, lots of things to do and see. I'm sure that whenever I return to the monastery I will be pretty worn out.
It's crazy to think that when we return on the 24th, I will only have about a month left here in France. The time is going really fast. The first month here seemed to go a lot slower, but now the time is flying by. Before I know it I'll be on a plane home.
Today I have to get some more packing and school work done so I'll be ready to leave tomorrow! I'm also planning on doing a couple skype sessions while I still can.
I won't have my computer on the trip, but I will be sharing one with some of the girls, so hopefully I can blog regularly. I will also be writing in my journal.
Please keep me in your prayers as I continue to travel the world!!
Au Revoir!

My Day...

Bonjour!
I started my day a little aggravated. For one example, I had ordered some stuff to have a cellphone over here. Needless to say, i don't have it all figured out yet and I'm 50 dollars in. I had to get out, so I went to this place by the monastery. It's pretty much a huge rocky cliff. When I got there I found two of my friends and a beautiful sunset. While discussing our problems of the day I picked up a rock and then launched it over the cliff. It felt good. We all decided to continue to throw rocks as far as we could. We did this for a good while before taking a deep breath and heading back inside.
Later that night, the one friend and I decided to take a walk outside. We went to the terrace, climbed onto the railing and took in the view of the stars. Looking off the terrace I felt as if I was floating in midair; as high as the mountain peaks. I can't describe the sight I was taking in. There were the silhouettes of the surrounding mountains, the stars peaking out right above them and then expanding and illuminating the whole sky. As we sat there, soaking it all in, I realized that this is what life is all about. I realized that after studying tons of painters, none can compare to the hand of God.
To sum up my day in the words of Forrest Gump...
It began like:
"Sometimes, I guess there just aren't enough rocks."
It ended like:
"I couldn't tell where heaven stopped and the earth began."
Forrest Gump ♥
"And that's all I have to say about that."

Barcelona!

Bonjour!

Sorry that i haven't blogged for a long time. I've been so busy traveling and with schoolwork. The latest great adventure in my life was a trip to Barcelona! This trip started on February 8th. Thankfully I kept my journal updated on the trip to reference to.
Our first stop was Carcassonne. It was really cold there. Our professor, Eric, told us that there hadn't been a cold spell like this since 1985 and people were calling it "the great cold." As you can imagine, I was delighted to hear that. So while we all froze we explored the city. We saw a museum and then headed up to the castle.

We ate at a little restaurant before going to learn about the church. It had some beautiful stained glass windows.

Soon we were back on the road and headed to Narbonne. On the way there we got to see the Pyrenees Mountains. They were gorgeous. Words can't describe them and pictures don't do them justice.
Narbonne is where we had supper and got a hotel for the night. We ended up trying the McDonald's there. It was really high class for McD's, sounds crazy but wait until you see!

They had do it yourself ordering screens. Is it crazy that I was confused in a McDonald's because it was so high tech? Oh Europe....
Then we spent the night in Narbonne and I got to see a gorgeous sunset.
It's these little things in life that bring the most joy. More often I find myself taking in these precious moments, really absorbing them. Our lives can become so rushed that we forget what life is really about. To me, truly living your life can sometimes mean taking the time to just sit back and enjoy it.
The next morning we made our way across the Spanish border and to Barcelona. After arriving at our hostel we unpacked before taking a walking tour of the city. The hostel had 8 people to a room. There were 4 bunk-beds.  It was a little crowed and interesting but it worked just fine. Tim took us for the walk and showed us the main roads. After leading us to the Christopher Columbus statue we were on our own to explore and find our way back to the hostel. The statue of CC was very tall and it showed him pointing out into the ocean, towards the U.S.

A group of us were determined to find the beaches. We had a map of the city which helped a little. It still managed to take us what seemed like forever. However, when we finally saw the sand leading to the Mediterranean, it was worth it. Of course I had to put my feet in the freezing water.

We walked out onto the rocks and took in the sunset over the city. Hannah and I talked about how there are some moments, some sights, that just can't be fully captured by a camera. You just have to sit and soak it in.
God is good.
After the beach we went back to the hostel before finding a place to eat. Hannah and I chose a little hole in the wall that had some great sandwiches. Then the two of us just walked around the main street, absorbing it all. We met some amazing people, and learned about their lives. It may not sound safe, but it was harmless and it was so interesting to hear their backgrounds. The last people we met before calling it a night were Maria and Louis. They were a couple from Argentina who were in Barcelona for Vacation. Louis is a doctor and he spoke a little bit of English. Maria is Italian  and also spoke Spanish, but very little English. Were were talking with them when an older man joined our conversation. He would sing and Maria would dance. It was another great experience. I can picture us now; sitting and clapping along, all laughing and just having fun with people we hardly new.
The next morning we went to the Picasso museum. It was so interesting to see how his work changed throughout his life, reflecting his emotions at the time. He was able to truly capture that strong feeling of emotion in each of his paintings. When you think of Picasso you usually thing of the abstract paintings from the end of his life. This was just one theme of the paintings from his collection. From room to room I got to see his life change from inspirational to depressing and sadness and then back to enlightening and extremely symbolic.
After the museum we went to a restaurant before meeting a current Spanish painter. Her name was Mercedes. Mercedes had a unique story herself. She went to college and became a lawyer. After graduation she went back to art school. She shared with us that studying law was her parents dream for her, but she knew her whole life she wanted to be a painter. She showed us her studio and told us about her life as a painter. We were able to buy some paintings of hers and she even personally signed them for us.
Our next trip for the day was to the Gaudi Gardens. It was a huge garden that overlooked the city.

That night we went to a Tapa restaurant. Tapas are small portions of different foods. We each got to pick around four. They were delicious! It was my favorite meal so far.
The next morning we went on the bus to visit Sagrada Familia, the church in the center of the city. It's in the process of construction. It's another masterpiece of Gaudi. He designed the whole building and created it so every little detail has meaning to it. He included something for all people, so that anyone can look at the structure and find parts of themselves in it.
We got audio sets and toured the whole building. The inside was beautifully decorated with stained glass windows.

While inside we witnessed a proposal. That's how much this building means to people, it's gorgeous, religious, and a building that will go down in history.
Gaudi made the church extremely tall. However he made it 1 meter less than the highest surrounding mountains. He did this to show that while humanity is great, nothing is greater than nature and God's creation.
While in Barcelona we also go to see the Miro art museum. Miro was quite different than other painters we had studied. Miro had the concept of the "Ladder of Escape." The Ladder of Escape was included in many of the paintings. It was a way to escape all of the problems in the world during that time. Miro also had some paintings that were very simple. One was all blue with a bright red line and then black dots....
Although this painting is really simple, it has a lot of meaning. I just sat in front of the painting and absorbed it. It brought simplicity to life.
Our last night in Barcelona we got to see Flamenco dancing. I had never seen this type of dancing before and it was really cool. The dancers were so passionate. Their facial expressions were so strong that you could feel what they were feeling. The singer was very good also. It was a great experience.

This was our last night in Barcelona.
On the way back to the monastery, we stopped at the Dali museum and got to inspect his paintings as well. One that stuck out to me would be the one of Abe Lincoln.
At first glance (in person) you may only see the woman, but after taking a picture you can see the face of Abe. Very neat!
Overall, the trip to Barcelona was a great experience. Along with the other students, I was in need of a change, a break for a couple days. Barcelona was a breath of fresh air. I'd love to go back to Spain someday, the culture is very interesting to me.
This past week was Valentine's Day. I was lucky enough to get many Valentine's. I hung them up on my door so I get to look at them everyday and I'm reminded of the great people I have in my life.
First I received one from Everett and Mary, a couple from my church. It's a great thing to know that my church family is thinking about me. I also got one from Mom and Dad. I don't need a card to be reminded of the love of my parents, but it made my day.
I also got some valentine's from my family in Philly! Holly and Jody sent me a card and Evan and Emma made personal valentine's! They are the cut out hearts. Emma colored a picture and Evan wrote his whole valentine in French! He did a really great job! It's amazing how the smallest things can sometimes mean the world. Thank you all for the wonderful reminders of how blessed I am!
Thursday we went back to Toulouse. We got to see the Garonne River.
We also visited the Dominican houses and some museums including a medical museum.
Since I haven't blogged for a long time, the everyday details of my life at the monastery have been lost. I will try to blog more often. One of the latest joys I remember is getting to skype my mother and brother and they surprised me with my Nana and Pappap! The weekend after our skype, my Nana and Pappap headed to Florida to spend the rest of the winter. It was great to see them and get to talk to them. I love my family.
I just have one thing left to tell you before I end this post....and those who know me should be extremely proud, so be prepared. Today, for lunch I ate some Octopus. Yes. Amy Clevenger ate Octopus. Write it down because I'm not sure it will be happening again.

Au Revoir!
Until I write again!

Excursion #2: Toulouse

Bonjour!

Well, Friday was 3 weeks since I left home! It's crazy to think that one more week will be a month. I've never been away from home this long so it's a new thing for me. I've been doing pretty good so far though. I email my mom multiple times a day. I skype with my friends some during the week and I skype my family every weekend.
Thursday we went on our second excursion. We went to the city of Toulouse. This is were we flew into for our second flight when we originally came over. From Toulouse we took the bus to Ambialet. Needless to say, I hardly even remember the Toulouse airport. By that point we were all pretty exhausted from the flights. So thursday we got to spend time actually exploring Toulouse. Our main attractions were the Saint Raymond Museum and the martyrdom of Saturnin ( Saint Sernin's Basilica).

Saint Sernin's Basilica was massive. It was a site for pilgrimages and was seen as a  safe haven. The church was built as a marking place of the burial of Toulouse's first Bishop. He was tied to a bull and the bull drug him out the city gates. The rope eventually broke and a church was built where his body laid. There is a road that leads to the church. The name of the road translates to the road of the bull. It was built in the form of the transept and like most medieval churches, it is oriented to the east, ready for Christ's return. It's made of both brick and stone, creating a strong support system. The inside has an arched ceiling and 1/4 circle arches on the sides for support.

We also spent a lot of time in the museum.

After learning about the history of Toulouse we were given some free time to explore ourselves and shop. For lunch I actually had a cheeseburger and fries, very American but I couldn't help it....it smelt so good! We went into a bunch of shops and I found myself in a very cute and quaint little store. I bought a scarf that I fell in love with. You'll see it in the pictures I put up from the play which I wore it to. Later I ended up bringing Hannah back to the same store. She bought a scarf and I bought some more things as well.
Friday we watched a movie in art class. It was the movie "Cyrano de Bergerac." It's an old french film. It was also made into an American film called Roxanne which we watched last week. We watched the french version with subtitles so we were able to understand it. We watched the film so we would be able to understand the plot when at the theater later that night.  We went into Albi and saw the play "Cyrano de Bergerac." It was so amazing to see a french play. Although I couldn't understand all the words, I did know the plot and their language is just so beautiful to hear. We all decided to dress up for the play and it was really fun to get all fancied up and go out together.

(My roommate, Devon, and I)

There's my new scarf! After the play we played card games and had a good time. Yesterday I spent most of the time uploading pictures, and relaxing while listening to music. I got to skype with my brother, Adam. He is student teaching at Indiana High School right now so we talked about that some along with other stuff. A lot of times I miss him just being goofy. I miss little things from home like that. Like him always jumping out from behind doors to scare me, listening to him play the guitar, and just talking to him about things. I miss my mom's back rubs and hugs before bed. I miss "playing" with the horses with my dad. This weekend my mom went with my Nana and Pappap to NC to see my sister. They were helping my sister do some shopping for her wedding this summer. I wish I could've been there to see her trying dresses on and all the fun girl stuff. I haven't been able to talk to my sister much since I've been here. She works a lot and with the time change, it makes it difficult. I hope that I'll get to skype with her and catch up soon...
Last night we watched Hercules after supper. I forgot how much I love that movie. I remember my friend Kelsey loved to sing "I Wont Say I'm in Love" that Meg sings in the movie. After the movie I worked on my art project before going to bed.
This week I also got a package from home! My mom sent some of the things i wasn't able to fit in my suitcase, along with peanut butter (which they don't have over here)!!

Today I'm hoping to get a lot of work done and then go for a walk to relax and explore! It won't be too long until we're traveling to Barcelona so i'm really looking forward to that!
Have a great Sunday everyone!

Au revoir!

Every Day is an Adventure

Bonjour!

This weekend was pretty laid back. Us health majors did a lot of studying. We have our first anatomy exam friday. I gotta start out strong! The beginning of the week went along with the normal schedule of classes.
This morning we got up at 8 and did insanity (a workout program). It felt good to get up earlier and start the day out with a workout. We're hopefully gonna to keep doing it. We have Sophie's class at 11 then french after lunch. After french we have Eric the elder's class because tomorrow we're going to Toulouse with him for our excursion. That means new pictures to come!
Earlier in the week we had an interesting dinner. Joe, one of the boys on the trip had never really ate fruit before. He has only eaten one grape and a piece on an orange in his lifetime. So the guys had the idea to blindfold him, and have him samples all the different fruit we had. I have to admit, it was pretty funny. Joe ended up really liking some of the fruit too!

Yesterday I spent most of my day studying but we did take a little break to go outside. Here's some pictures of me with the dogs <3

They're so cute! Then after supper and some more studying we decided to go for a walk...in the dark, with barely any light. Yeah....we're smart. Wanna guess how far we made it? About 100 yards. Here's a picture of us starting out!
Being that we're a group of girls, we got scared and sprinted back to the monastery. It all makes great memories. I can't wait to make a million more memories in the next 3 1/2 months!

Au Revoir!

P.S. I also upload all of my photos to this link...
